What is the Proper Etiquette for Divorce Court?
Miller & Terry Attorneys at Law take the time to understand your case before determining the best course of action. Keeping current on new laws & regulations ensures your attorney has most prevalent knowledge of the law combined with years of experience to win your case.
Divorce Court Etiquette
We’ve compiled some simple suggestions for you to follow to avoid displeasing the judge:
Be Respectful
There are many people in a courtroom who help things run smoothly. The moment you enter the building, be courteous and polite to everyone you meet. Address your judge as “Your Honor” and respond politely if you’re asked a question. Turn off your cell phone, or leave it in the car to prevent avoidable distractions.
Dress for Success
Think of court like a job interview: the judge is making his or her decision based on a variety of factors. Professional dress will go a long way to help you make a positive impression on your judge. Hats are strictly forbidden, and we recommend keeping adornments like makeup, jewelry, or tattoos minimal or covered.
Check Your Emotions
Divorce is an ugly affair because no one wins. There are a lot of emotions involved, and it can be easy to get swept up in the moment and forget yourself. Let your attorney do the talking, and only speak when directed to do so by your lawyer or the judge. Don’t lose your temper or act out – the judge will be keeping a close eye on all parties and any negative reactions may influence his or her decision.
Keep Your Documents Organized
Every court proceeding requires a lot of paperwork. Work with your attorney to make sure you have a clear understanding of your case. Keep all necessary documents at hand and filed for easy access. You will also look more professional and well-kept if you have your paperwork in a folder rather than clutter spilling across the table.
