Keeping New Drivers Safe
Getting a driver’s license may mean freedom to teens, but it can be terrifying for parents. That’s because teens don’t always appreciate the responsibility that driving entails. As a DUI attorney, I regularly see the consequences of having young drivers on the road. Sometimes teen drivers have learned a sobering lesson. Other times, the outcome is far more tragic.
As any DUI attorney would tell teen drivers, there are plenty of ways to stay safe behind the wheel. Keeping your cell phone turned off and minimizing distractions are just the beginning. For instance, as any seasoned DUI attorney will say, many teen driving accidents involve speeding, so slowing down is always a good idea.
Skilled DUI Attorney in Lee’s Summit, MO
It also makes sense for teens to drive alone rather than with teen passengers. As a DUI attorney, I’ve found that kids are simply more prone to accidents when other teens are in the car. Of course, the worst recipe for teens behind the wheel is drinking or using drugs and driving.
In my practice as a DUI attorney, I’ve witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking reality of teen DUI. What makes these cases most difficult is the realization that they didn’t have to happen. Driving under the influence always involves a choice about whether or not to drive. Too many teens make the wrong choice. Then the services of a DUI attorney become necessary.
That wrong choice is why a car crash is the most frequently cited cause of death for teens in America. In fact, four times as many teens are involved in a collision as compared to older drivers in any other age group.
Part of the reason that teens are so collision prone is that they simply don’t have as much experience on the road. They may overestimate their abilities and underestimate risks. This inexperience, mixed with a propensity for driving under the influence, makes driving dangerous for teens. As a DUI attorney, I encourage parents to discuss the dangers of driving under the influence with their kids.
