Having a clean background check is one of the most crucial components of the pre-employment process. Living in an era where social media has become a hiring factor, it is absolutely essential that you have a clean background check. More and more employers use pre-employment background checks, which means that even the smallest detail on your record could make or break your employment candidacy. So, just how important is your background check and what can you do to protect yourself?

Background Checks: Why they Matter & How to Protect yourself

Landing a Job

When hiring, employers often seek out the most trustworthy and reliable employees. One of the ways employers can gauge how well you fit this description is by running a background check. Here, they can examine everything, including your previous work, credit, education, and criminal history. And it does not stop here. Employers even have access to your driving record and any other minor infractions. If you do have flaws on your record, it is best to directly address those issues when questioned about them. Honesty and forthcomingness will help employers view you favorably. And although there is no guarantee that you will get the job, it certainly increases your likelihood.

Low-Paying Work

Failure to produce a clean background check or be honest about your history can limit you to a low-paying job. Oftentimes, this means you will be looking at a major wage cut. Some of today’s largest fast food chains are now requiring background checks, so do not try to fool any of your potential employers. If you do have a tarnished background check, know that there have been some laws instituted for your protection.

When considering an employee with a previous legal offense on their record for employment, employers are to consider the EEOC’s (The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) following guidelines: “The EEOC cites the most important considerations as:  (1) the nature and gravity of the offense (2) the time that has lapsed since the offense and (3) the nature of the job. To aid in compliance with Title VII, the EEOC guidelines provide employers with examples of best business practices,” reported a source. Despite these existing guidelines, it is still best for job-seeking employees to maintain a clean background check or take legal action, working toward acquiring this status.
